🐶 This is a balanced recipe I’ve previously prepped, but needed to make some substitutions & I wanted to share this with you. It’s often thought that even within a balanced recipe, it may be the end of the world if you run out of a particular ingredient or you are unable to continue sourcing it. It’s NOT. I wanted to share how I dealt with this while meal prepping yesterday…
🥬 Instead of using kale & cauliflower like my recipe calls for, I had to temporarily replace those vegetables with boiled spinach + brussels sprouts, and baked squash because that was all I had on hand. These vegetables provide added fiber & are not being relied on meet important nutrient RAs (recommended allowances).
🐟 I was also out of mackerel, so instead, I included sardines. I increased the amount of sardines being fed, to meet EPA/DHA & Vitamin D needs because mackerel containers higher amounts of these essential nutrients.
🐄 Beef Spleen was another important ingredient I was completely out of & unable to find at local stores. Instead I substituted pork spleen since I had the perfect amount on hand. I needed to increase the amount of pork spleen being fed for it to be a good substitute for beef spleen in my recipe.
🦪 Lastly, I was out of canned oysters, which were my source of zinc! Luckily, my meal plan covers supplement substitutions, so I didn’t have to do much math to figure out how many zinc pills I needed to feed over the course of 14 days.
🤓 If you’re not sure what an appropriate substitution is for a particular ingredient in your balanced recipes, you can always reach out to the person who formulated them for you. If you made the recipes yourself, just spend some time comparing nutrient data (or supplements) so you can make yourself a little list of alternative ingredients for future reference!
